Dr. Andrew Orr

Climate Scientist

Andrew contributes his expertise on the weather and climate of the polar regions to PCAPS.

Andrew holds a BSc in Physics from Edinburgh University and a PhD in Radio Physics from King’s College London. He was previously a post-doctoral researcher at University College London on modelling of atmospheric processes in the polar regions, and then as a consultant at ECMWF.

Andrew undertakes research into the processes responsible for climate change and variability in the polar regions, as well as high mountain areas such as the Himalayas and Andes. This is predominately achieved using atmospheric models. He uses his research to understand high-impact inter-disciplinary globally-important problems, such as how i) interactions between the atmosphere and cryosphere in the Antarctic are causing increased ice loss from its ice sheets, which is contributing to sea-level rise, and ii) changes to the hydroclimate of the Himalayan region resulting in shrinkage of its glaciers and snowpack, which presents a formidable water-resource problem.

Most recently, Andrew is investigating extreme weather events in the Antarctic and Himalayan region, which despite being high impact are poorly understood.
