Daniela is the social-science lead for the PCAPS project, building on the experience she gained as one of the co-chairs of the Societal and Economic Research and Applications (SERA) task team of the WMO’s Polar Prediction Project (PPP), which concluded in 2022.

Daniela holds a BSc in International Management from Otto-von-Guericke University (Germany), an MSc in Environment and Development from the University of Manchester (UK) and a PhD in Antarctic Studies from the University of Canterbury. She has held teaching positions at three different New Zealand universities and is now an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury. She is also one of the two chief officers of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research’s Ant-ICON (Integrated Science to Inform Antarctic and Southern Ocean Conservation) research programme and is on the editorial boards of The Polar Journal and Antarctic Science.

Daniela is a social scientist with a background in environmental management, Antarctic politics and tourism research. Her research interests include the modalities of the various forms of human engagement with the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic, the health of polar socio-ecological systems, polar operational decision-making and risk assessments and the complexities of Antarctic values and conservation.
