Jelmer’s academic education is in Social Psychology (MSc) and Cultural Geography (MSc; PhD). He applies this broad social-scientific basis in research concerned with interactions between societal actors and the natural environment, by using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Jelmer has over a decade of experience in conducting interdisciplinary research in both conceptual and applied contexts, ranging from flood risk perceptions and weather impacts on tourist experiences, to co-production of climate services and mapping of user needs for weather and sea-ice information.

In his current position at MET Norway, Jelmer is involved various research projects both in Arctic contexts and beyond, in which he contributes to identifying user contexts that shape preferences for weather and climate information Next to being involved in PCAPS, is Jelmer also leading the Nordic Node of the WMO Arctic Regional Climate Centre Network, and is a member of the WMO SERA group.
