Dr. Jørn Kristiansen

Jørn is the natural-science lead for the PCAPS project, building on the experience he gained as a member of the Steering Group of the WMO’s Polar Prediction Project (PPP) which concluded in 2022.

Jørn holds MSc and PhD in meteorology from the University of Oslo. As Director of the Development Centre for Weather Forecasting, he leads a team of over 60 professionals dedicated to advancing Science for Services. Notably, the Centre has a strong Arctic focus, leading the development and operation of the Copernicus Arctic Regional ReAnalysis (CARRA) and maintaining a dedicated short-range NWP model system for the Arctic, AROME-Arctic. He serves as the leader of Yr's steering committee, overseeing technical infrastructure, presentation, scientific content, and day-to-day operations of the service. His extensive involvement in collaborative initiatives includes leadership roles in operational NWP collaborations, and co-chairing initiatives like the Machine Learning pilot project at ECMWF and the Advisory Group for Global Cryosphere Watch.

With diverse research experience ranging from climate studies to high-resolution EPS, he has successfully coordinated various research projects. More recently, he is engaged in building and employing data-driven weather prediction models.
